One of the biggest blunders brides make, and often one of their biggest regrets, is wearing heavy makeup in an attempt to match the magnitude of the occasion.
Big mistake. Here’s a little tip: you don’t have to wear extra makeup just because it’s a special occasion. You still want to look like you. If you’re used to the natural look, then stick with the natural look.
Even if you’re used to wearing heavier makeup, most experts say the natural look is the way to go.
If you’re getting married in the bright sunlight, use a foundation that’s just a shade darker than your natural skin tone.
The sun illuminates everything, and the last thing you want is one of those infamous foundation lines being lit up for everyone to see.
If your wedding takes place in a dimmer setting, then it’s okay to go a couple of shades darker with the foundation. But don’t go overboard. Even dim lighting can illuminate flaws. Don’t forget to use a primer before you apply the foundation to make it last longer.
The same basic rules apply to blush. If you’re going for a natural look, keep the blush just a shade or two darker than your skin. Choose muted colors like a soft rose or a peach tone. Softer hues let you brush your blush on more liberally without looking washed out in pictures.
Your lipstick should look natural as well, but it doesn’t have to be boring. Feel free to use color, just don’t go over the top. And most importantly, make sure your lipstick stays on your lips. After all, you don’t want the “you may now kiss the bride” moment to end with your chosen shade smeared all over your new husband’s face. Lipsticks designed to be long lasting are the best at staying in place.
Last but not least, decorate those “windows to the soul” that have been sparkling since the day you got engaged. For a natural look, don’t go too heavy or too bright. Keep the mascara from clumping by using a top-of-the-line brand (splurge—you deserve it!). Choose eye shadow shades that complement your other makeup choices.
Now you know how to create a natural look for your wedding—at least that’s one thing you can cross of your mile-long to-do list before your big “I do.”
